At Bullitt Reservation in Ashfield, Hilltown Tree & Garden created a native landscape. The plants came from local sources. The design needs little upkeep and gives food and shelter to wildlife. Bullitt covers 260 acres in Ashfield and Conway. The new garden is part of this wider protected landscape.

The project goals

The garden needed to fit the land. It also had to support wildlife and be simple to care for. We chose each plant for more than its first-season look. Soil, water, sun, wind, and future care all shaped the plan.

Site review before design

We first studied the site. We checked the soil, drainage, light, wind, and care needs. These details guided the plant list. They are also key to our landscape design and installation work. A plant has a better chance to thrive when it fits its site.

Native plants from local sources

The plan used American elm, winterberry, highbush and lowbush blueberry, elderberry, panicum, and little bluestem. These native plants add form, color, food, and shelter. Local plants also help the garden blend with the land around it.

Design and volunteer work

Hilltown Tree & Garden made the plant list and landscape plan. We also helped volunteers carry out the work. A clear plan kept the project on track. It also gave each plant enough room to grow.

A landscape that fits its setting

Native plants and a careful site review shaped this project. The garden was made to improve as it grows. It should stay useful, attractive, and good for wildlife.

We can pair native planting with perennial garden care. We also offer forest and meadow reclamation for larger sites.
