Hilltown Foundation Plantings in Western Massachusetts

Chesterfield, MA

This Western Mass. house was constructed in 2006. The clients contacted Jim to put together a landscape design which was then implemented in 2007. Two years later the landscape looks well established. This gentle landscape has a mix of grasses, shrubs, small trees and flowering perennials, along with three disease-resistant American Elms in the front lawn. The first two photos show the foundation plantings in the front of the house and the last photo show a perennial and shrub border in the backyard.

You are encompassed in this foundation planting as you walk down the brick path to the front door. This allows the homeowners or guests to enter through the garden rather then just experiencing it from a distance. The incorporation of trees and shrubs gives this garden four seasons of interest. Trees and shrubs used were: Kousa Dogwood, Japanese Maple, American Elm, Nine Bark & Annabelle Hydrangea. This is a different angle of the same garden pictured above. In bloom is the Coneflower, Black Eyed Susan and russian sage. Before these were in bloom there was color from the Catmint, Yarrow, Salvia and Liatris. This garden is hot and dry and these are all great plants for this environment. This is the backyard garden that was designed to be low in height. This was done to avoid blocking the vista of the wood and wetlands below. Some of the plants used in this garden were: rug junipers, hydrangea, spirea, coneflower, sedum, black eye susan and daisies. Again this garden is hot, dry and well drained so plant selection is crucial so they can survive and prosper through the heat of the summer without supplemental water.
